Canicross – Canine Sport | Dog Cat

by admin

Canicross is still an unknown term for most Brazilians, but according to the wave of popularity that has been gaining worldwide, this should change in a short time. Created in the United Kingdom in the early 90s, the sport emerged as a form of training for traction or sled dogs, and was soon noticed as a pleasurable activity, where dogs and their owners can have fun and maintain health.

Briefly, the canicross can be described as a kind of trekking for dogs. For practice, the main equipment needed is a driver’s belt (waist belt), a traction vest for the dog (running harness) and an elastic rope that joins the two items, connecting the partners and avoiding big jumps in the path. Irregular terrain and trails are among the favorite places among sports enthusiasts, which can also be done in groups with more than one dog per driver.

Practiced by all types of breed and size of dogs, the restriction of the practice of this activity is reduced only to the age of the animal, which must have more than one year of life. It is also worth remembering that before starting to practice this sport, both owner and pet must undergo medical examinations, ensuring adequate physical conditions.

As it is a new and uncommon practice in Brazil, there may still be some difficulty on the part of those interested in finding all the appropriate equipment in the national market. However, the Brazilian Factory of Shows and Events already works with the import of the necessary equipment for the sport and, at the moment, is committed to the creation of Brazilian Canicross Federation, which should represent the first step for the practice to acquire more and more followers here.
