Flyball – Canine sport | Dog Cat

Flyball is a sport practiced by dogs, in which teams compete against each other, and has become very popular, reaching the third most popular spot in the world. It is not a popular sport in Brazil yet, like Agility, but it has a tendency to win many fans here.

O Flyball it appeared in the late 1960s and early 1970s, in southeastern California, United States, created by Herbert Wagner. Herbert wanted to create a system for his dog to have fun catching balls, when the owner was not at home to launch them and be able to play.

From this idea came a box that throws a ball and is triggered by the dog itself. After the creator of the box introduced it on TV, on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, several creators and trainers became interested in the idea and adopted it.

O flyball sport it started with a simple game of throwing and catching the balls until it developed into what it is today, a race to compete, either in teams or individually. It is the fastest canine sport and also the only one that is played as a team.

The first flyball tournament took place in the United States in 1983. The sport has expanded to Canada, Australia, South Africa and several countries in Europe. The UK even has an annual tournament and has hosted European tournaments. The organization responsible for taking care of the rules of the game and the competitions that take place is NAFA, created in 1984.

Europe has the largest flyball tournament since 2007, having hosted England in 2007, Czech Republic in 2008, Belgium in 2009 and 2010, Germany in 2011 and returned to England last year.
